And it's still relevant years later. In other words, the average local meteorologist is clueless. However, I have found a great, accurate source for weather - DT from wxrisk. He actually reads models and makes EDUCATED, accurate forecasts- only source I trust!

And in no way is this directed at the situation in AL, GA, TN etc. What has happened there is no joke. Caught unprepared, motorists/ students/ parents etc were put into a real state of emergency and my heart goes out to them.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Due to the recent snow/ice storm here in Southeastern VA, I’ve decided to take some time out from my Christmas crafting to put together this little public service announcement. After all, these wonderful southern people have allowed me (a Yank) to take up residence in their region for the past ten years; I figure it’s the least I could do.

Happy Holidays!
(Disclaimer: In no way is this meant to be offensive. Some of my favorite people are ‘Southerners’ and we often joke about the differences between the north and south, driving being one of the best topics! So please take this in fun and I hope you get a good laugh from it.)
**Winter storm advisory is in effect until 7pm tomorrow night,

In effort to meet the anticipated needs of citizens in the southern United States, we have created a FAQs section below should you have difficulty understanding this advisory.**

Survival Tips: The Snow-Shocked Southerner

GENERAL FAQs

What do they mean, we’re getting snow? What the hell is that?!?!
DO NOT PANIC!
Snow is the white stuff falling from the sky. Should you look out the window and see some of this wintry goodness blanketing the ground, drop to your knees and thank the Snow Gods for such a blessing. Then realize you have no concept of winter travel and immediately go back inside.
But I haven’t gone to the store yet!
Trust me; you will survive one day without bread and milk. I know that seems impossible now but I promise it will be okay.
My next door neighbor is a Yank and he says that anything under a foot is a joke. I asked if that meant he was going to work. He laughed for about five minutes then said there wasn’t enough money in the world to get him behind the wheel. When I pointed out that he had a big 4WD truck, he laughed even harder. I think he said something about Virginia drivers. I dunno. Eventually, I just smiled and nodded – you know I didn’t want to be rude. But what the you-know-what is going on with that Yank? They talk so darn fast, you know? I could’ve missed something. Bless his heart but he couldn’t stop that obnoxious laughter.
You’re better off checking the FAQs here:
‘Survival Tips: I Have a New Yankee Neighbor (bless his/her/their heart/s)’

**Winter storm advisory remains in effect until 7pm tomorrow night. Snow early with freezing rain and ice later. Or you may just get freezing rain or nothing at all. Look, if you want to know the weather look out your window!**

ADVANCED FAQ's
They just added ice, freezing rain and/or sleet to the forecast. What’s happening!? Where am I!?
DO NOT PANIC!
A relative of snow, ice has the initial appearance of rain as it falls. But, DON’T BE FOOLED! Ice is nothing like rain. Ice is slick and deceptive and warrants extreme caution! Handled inappropriately, and it could kill you.
WHAT?!
Freezing rain is precipitation that freezes upon impact with a surface. Significant accumulation is considered an ice storm. Regardless of amount, it causes treacherous road conditions. And… it could kill you.
Sleet, on the other hand, is precipitation that is already frozen (to some extent) before impact. Like ice and freezing rain, it creates a slippery road surface making travel unsafe. It too… could kill you.
But…
Bottom line: DO NOT drive anywhere! Ice, in any of its forms… could kill you!
HELP!
DO NOT PANIC!
Take a deep breath… repeat after me… ‘Ice is slippery. Ice can kill me. It doesn’t matter if I have feet or tires. I will not leave my house. Ice is slippery. Ice can kill me.’ Chant this mantra over and over again until you’re sure you understand. Then put on your Snuggie, get a cup of hot chocolate and cuddle up on the couch. There now, all better.

FAQ's (For the Intellectually Impaired)

Whatever, dude. I’ve me a big ol' pick-up with 4WD – ain’t no way I’m staying in for this! YeeHaw!
*** STOP. READ THIS NOW! ***
Under no circumstance does owning a 4WD vehicle make you the super hero of snow transit. Seriously, get those delusions out of your head right now! In the event you get stuck in a snow drift (unlikely down south) then by all means utilize that little sucker, but do not get all ‘big and bad’ with your jacked up truck and think that you’re immune to the white stuff. Ice is ice and you will still lose control when you drive too fast, then slam on your breaks last minute. And I really don’t want to end up in a heap of scrap metal!
I was just wondering if there is anything special we need to know. Like, can we still get cell service and whatnot with a storm like this? Like I really can’t be without my iPhone.
YES, PAY ATTENTION!
When driving in snow/sleet/ice/rain, not only should drive SLOW and keep distance between you and other cars, you also need to drive and defensively. I realize this is something you are not used to, as it requires, at the very least, the following driving skills:
- Using turn signals when appropriate (changing lanes, turning, etc.).
The stick on the left-hand side of your steering wheel will enable this device. Down = Left / Up = Right.
- Actually stopping at a red light before turning right on red.
That means putting your foot down on the break to prevent the car from moving.
- Understanding the difference between a stop sign and a yield sign (they aren't just pretty colors). And if you could also master 'merging'...
- Recognizing that you’re sharing the road with other drivers – it isn’t all about you and your need to get somewhere ASAP!
- Checking your mirrors BEFORE changing lanes to make sure there is sufficient space and that you won’t cut someone off. Remember: mirrors actually serve a purpose beyond checking out how cool you look or putting on make-up. USE THEM!
- PUT AWAY THE CELL PHONE!!!! SERIOUSLY, NO TEXTING, NO TALKING! NO $h!t!
I know you just can’t wait to call your BFF's to tell them that it’s snowing, or to post a photo of the car flipped over in a ditch (which is a truck, by the way) but don’t you think now is the time to focus on the road?! I’m just saying…
-SLOW the (expletive) down! 4WD is NOT a license to speed in snow/ice nor does it make you invincible. And your actions will cause accidents, or worse, kill people!

**Winter storm advisory has been lifted. Little to no snow accumulation has been reported and most areas are now experiencing rain showers (without ice). We are now monitoring the next big system heading our way. Check back often for the latest details as we prepare for another blizzard. **
I think this might be my longest hiatus yet on the blog. Not
that I’m trying to break any records…What's worse is that I actually have 2 posts just about finished but never got up.

But a silent blog does not mean a silent sewing room! I have
been working on (or planning) several projects. The Peninsula MQG gave us a
quilt challenge with the theme, ‘weather’. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to
complete my quilt by the deadline, but the planning process inspired a bunch of
design ideas. Now, I just need to organize them.

Scout decided that the
Scrappy Trip-A-Long is his...

I’m also happy to say that I've finished my
Scrappy-Trip-A-Long quilt! I wish I had made another row of blocks because then
I’d be able to wrap my feet in it and still be covered. Technically, it’s the
first quilt that is actually mine so I can’t complain. I’d definitely like to
make another using that technique.

Let’s see what else… I’m about a third of the way through a
tutorial/tip guide for metal framed purses and I hope to post that within the
month. But, let’s be real, it will probably be forthcoming in the new year (see, I originally wrote that for one of the unfinished posts).

And finally, I've started learning how to foundation paper piece. And I love the technique! I have several projects in the works but can't actually show them until after the holidays because they are gifts. However, you can see snippets on my IG and Flickr pages. I was asked
to make a block of the month for my local quilt guild (Peninsula MQG) and
decided stars would be fun. There are a ton of tutorials online and most of
them use this method. Google ‘Improv Star Tutorials’ or ‘Wonky Star Quilt

block is that you don’t have to measure, cut or make half-square triangles to
create the star. YES!

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";">It’s also
easy to adjust this block to any size. You could do a really large one as a

necessary).

consistent with each piece.

I hope everyone is staying cool :) Last weekend I was lucky enough to enjoy a short kayaking trip with one of my favorite people. And after that insane storm, I was definitely looking forward to it. We had the best campsite right on the water and it was actually cool enough for a fire. We really lucked out.
Besides a little R&R, I've also been working hard at updating the shop and finishing up some WIPs. The big shop projects are redoing the photos and updating the listings. Lighting is such an issue in my space so... it's taking for.ev.er.

But I'm really excited to list a new product - metal coin purses! It took awhile but I have finally perfected the pattern. They can really be frustrating at first but once you 'get it' they are a lot of fun to make.

I'm planning to post a quick tutorial that focuses on helpful tips. Look for it soon (I hope).
I decided, last minute, to take a quick photo of the baby shower gift I made. Of course, it's not the real gift (which is a strip of fabric on a design wall) but I couldn't show up without anything. Plus, I was going to make her a fabric box for the nursery anyway.

Originally, I wanted to put some margarita mix and chocolate into the box as a 'mommy-to-be' gift. However, I don't like margaritas (I know...) so I was clueless about which mix to buy. Then I started thinking about all the things I could include. And of course some items had to be funny, especially for this particular friend!

In the end, I put in some tea, honey sticks, Dove dark chocolate - normal items. But as I wandered the drink aisle, I had an epiphany! Mini-box wine!

AKA, The Mommy Juice Box, although being a mommy is not required (they work great for jewelry conferences too). Warning: If you enjoy wine, like for real wine, these are pretty disgusting... use with caution ;)

To add to the joke, I also bought some grenadine and 7-Up. Even when she wasn't pregnant, my friend often ordered Shirley Temples when we went out and I always harassed her about it. How could I not include them?!

For a last minute substitute gift, I thought this turned out great. In fact, I think fabric goody boxes would be great for any occasion and may just become my go-to gift!
Anyway, all I can tell you is that they turned out pretty cute. My favorites, though, were the fabric boxes. So this chick I know (that never reads my blog) is having a kid. She's also having a baby shower - TOMORROW! See that strip of fabric? That's her present. A strip of fabric stuck to a design board.

I'm considering wrapping my sketch and giving that to her. You know, just so she can see that I'm actually in the process of making her the best gift she will ever receive in her lifetime. I mean, I even did MATH for her!

Or maybe I should just go with some fabric boxes. Maybe I'll even take a picture of them...

On a serious note:
A dear friend from high school has just been signed into hospice care and could really use prayers/positive thoughts/etc. She's a wonderful person and I can't even begin to imagine how hard this must be for her, her husband and little girl. So, if you're reading this, maybe you could send a little love her way. With the nice weather and impending doom of summer (yes, I really feel that way), I've taken a brief hiatus to start/finish up some yard work. Once the heat settles in I won't be doing much of anything so I had to take advantage of the beautiful weather!

We are overrun with blackberries. Most people think this is the greatest thing in the world. Have you ever tried to control blackberries?!?! Once the vines hit the ground, they root. That bush looking thing behind Luna (on the left) is a blackberry thicket or the Fairy Fort. This year, do to downsizing, the fairies lost a bit of their ring. Sorry guys, we're all feeling the sting of the economy :/
Typically, I spend each spring ripping out blackberries, honeysuckle (which I love) and poison ivy. I've been told I should just spread some weed killer on everything but I can't bring myself to do that. Besides the fact that I don't want to poison the animals, (mine or nature's), we live on a peninsula and are surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay, Atlantic Ocean, the James and York Rivers, as wells as numerous lakes etc. I really can't justify polluting such a fragile ecosystem, which is already in danger, simply to save myself some manual labor. So... I spend weeks ripping, pulling, mowing, sneezing and cursing until I get the yards somewhat manageable.
I'm currently playing around with some linen fabric. I love the look of linen but it does stretch a bit (perhaps I cut it wrong) so that was challenging for me. You can see in the photo how warped it looks. I think I rushed and should have slowed down a bit. I still have to make my Sewing Dare shirt that Leila assigned to me and that will involve using a knit. I'll definitely go slow on that!

My new toy :)

I've been dying to say that! In February, I entered Stacy's (from Sew Stacy) Singer One giveaway. I remember thinking I'd 'do it later' but then told myself to enter before I forgot. And then one morning she emailed me with the good news!

I really wanted to do a post about this sooner but some things came up and this is the first opportunity I've had to blog. I also wanted to have completed a project using my new machine but that wasn't possible either. That's not to say I haven't been sewing with it, I just haven't completed an entire project.

First Impressions

First, I have to say that I have come to rely too heavily on the 1/4 inch foot for my Bernina. I am totally lost without one! However, the Singer One's 1/4" guide is very easy to follow. Being spoiled has just made me a bit slower as I get used to following the lines versus the foot's guide.

Don't mind the mess in the background... (this is actually very neat)

The 'ONE' is larger than my Bernina 230 and I love the way the front slopes down so that the fabric follows the curve - great for long pieces. Although it's bigger, they both have the same size throat so there's nothing to get used to regarding that.

One thing that's really cool is that there are a couple of new stitches that aren't offered on the Bernina. I especially like the two crescent options (9 & 10 from left) and the one that looks like medical stitches (2nd from left)!

A little stitch sampler

Sewing

While sewing, it feels quite sturdy and isn't overly loud. It's pretty smooth too. One thing that is taking some getting used to is the needle position. The Singer One has a fixed needle which is always 'up' when resting, while the Bernina's needle can be set to stay down which makes it more convenient when sewing curves or quilting. The needle can also be moved left or right in small increments which comes in handy when I don't trust my math skills and want to make my seam wider or more narrow.

So let's talk tension... Although I've been sewing for about four years now, I still consider myself a newb. I started sewing on a Brother - worse machine EVER. To be fair, it was their cheapest model and I truly didn't know what I was doing. Still, it only lasted a year of full-time sewing. In addition, the tension was so bad, that I was convinced I was doing something wrong until I read all the complaints. After that, any machine would have been incredible.

And any machine would eventually have tension issues. It's just part of being a sewist. It's like glaze firing ceramics. No matter how many times you've done it, how familiar you are with the equipment/materials, there's going to come a day when you open that kiln and want to cry/scream/curse because something must have gone wrong.

In sewing, you get all set - fabric cut/pinned, machine threaded, maybe some tunes playing... then BAM! Messed up stitches. So you re-thread/mess with the tension/change the needle - over and over and over - until NOTHING works except massive amounts of alcohol (because it always happens at the worst time) and maybe a trip to the LQS for repairs.

Straight stitch detail

How does the 'ONE' handle tension? Sadly, I had issues as soon as I started sewing. This was one of the reasons it took me so long to write up a post. I knew I'd have to figure out what was wrong but I didn't have the time so it took longer than I had wanted. Anyway, I read the manual, went online, did the normal trouble shooting, then walked away. The next time I sat down to sew, it worked. This has happened with my Bernina too. I chalk it up to Gremlins. I will say the longer I sewed, the more I started noticing the top stitches pulling to the side a bit. Not sure what's up with that.

I'm going to hold off with final conclusions until I've had more time to get to know her better. Oh, and buy a 1/4" foot ;)

The first meeting was in January and I love having it to look forward to each month. For March's meeting, there was a pot holder swap. I decided to go with Melanie's tutorial because, well, it's one of my favorites. I used some of my Little Apples fabric and backed it with linen which became the binding too. I'm making two more, just because :)

There is also an ongoing Quilt-a-long, following Quiltville's scrappy Many Trips Around The World tutorial which has become the scrappy-trip-along, thanks to all the quilty bloggers participating. I was glad to hear this since I've already made 12 blocks! The deadline to have a finished project is November. Plenty of time - of course I say that now...

My Goodness, My Guinness!

Finally! I have finally finished my tribute to the best beer on Earth - Guinness :)

This has been a work in progress since last year and I can't tell you how glad I am to have it complete. I wish I could say that I love how it turned out, but that's just not true. I'm proud of the fact that I pushed myself to try new techniques and to design something that relied on 'exact math', however, there are just too many flaws for me to be satisfied.

The biggest issue I have is with the quilting. The shamrock knot is good - much better than my first attempt. The pinwheel knots are atrocious (IMO). The hub says I'm being way too hard on myself. I say they could have been better. A lot better.

Close-up detail of the pinwheel quilting

Honestly, after unpicking them twice, I was just too frustrated to achieve perfection. I should have practiced more but I ran out of time (I was determined to post the tutorial before 3/17). I did spend an insane amount of hours drawing Celtic knots, but it's not the same as sewing them. My original plan was to create a Celtic knot border but after the pinwheels... Yeah, I settled for a basic geometric pattern.

My quilting also distorted the pint on the left side. It wasn't until I put it together that I noticed my pinwheels were sort of crooked too. I thought I could live with it but now I'm mad I didn't redo them. Again.

This is the original that I made last year (w/out border).
The sewing is a bit straighter but I like the background
of the new one much better. It's not as drab.

The thing I'm most happy about is the background. The original used a solid grey fabric and I hated how drab and boring it looked. When I stumbled upon Daisy Janie's Dapple Dot print in my stash, I knew it would be perfect.

I left the back a bloody mess of threads because I only half-binded the quilt using this method from Melanie Dramatic. For a 'clean' back, you could fuse a piece of fabric the same dimensions of your quilt (trimmed). I use Pellon's Wonder Under for all my fusing needs. Then bind as you would normally.

You could also do the inside-out method. Put your quilt and your backing fabric right sides together and stitch all four sides. Carefully cut a small opening in the backing fabric then turn right side out. Fuse a piece of fabric over the slit and you're finished. With either method, you can attach a hanging sleeve too. For mine, I'm using clips so I didn't have to worry about a sleeve.

Oh, and if you aren't a fan of Guinness (shame on you!) you can always create the pint using the color of your favorite <strike>water</strike> beer ;)
A couple weeks ago I received an email from Ramona at Thread Time letting me know that she nominated me for the Liebster Award. You might remember that Kristina from The Nerdy Sewist also nominated me a few months ago. For her nomination I had to list 5 blogs with under 200 followers and include a little something nice about each one. Ramona's nomination puts a little spin on this concept.

Instead of 5 blogs, I have to come up with 11! This may seem easy especially if you have a Google Reader feed like mine. However, the under 200 followers rule makes it a bit challenging. But I do think it's a good rule since the point of this award is to give recognition to some of the more 'unknown' blogs that we like.

But wait, there's more... This time, I get to answer and ask questions. Such a fun way to get to know each other, don't you think? I'm including some random photos too, just to break things up a bit. Enjoy!
However, I'm still working on the posts and I'm hoping to include some photos with one!

First, I won another Leibster Award. But this one... it's a bit more involved and so the post is taking me a bit longer than anticipated. Who knew finding blogs with under 200 followers would be so difficult!

The other amazing thing is... well, I won a really awesome prize (REALLY AWESOME) and I want to show it to you when I post. Hopefully, that will be soon!

Stay tuned!Wandering Threadshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00504109211160332971noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3655563796282554864.post-15390501222153141482013-02-04T23:26:00.000-05:002013-02-04T23:27:12.794-05:00WIPs

I considered making this a 'resolutions' post but I don't make resolutions. I prefer goals because they are something you work toward and meet at your own pace. Resolutions are for a year and that's just stressful, or in some cases, too long for me to slack! However, I do like the idea of starting fresh in January.

This year, I am working toward finishing all of my WIPs. I was going to start with the oldest but I put that one aside again. It's a quilt that will be double-sided but my measurements for the back were off and now it needs to be fixed. Plus, it's for me so it's low on the priority list.
So what is a priority? Living room pillows! Seriously, I've been making them for two years - pathetic, really.

As an added incentive (besides having nice pillows for the couch) I was invited to join the Pillow Pop group on flickr. The group will be making pillows based on the patterns in Pillow Pop by Heather Bostic of .House. of A La Mode. In other words, NO EXCUSES not to get them done!
I'm using Curio by Basic Grey.
Each one will be a different pattern. Right now I'm only making two sizes (18x18 and 24x24) but I'm hoping to include a couple round ones and a bolster or two. We'll see...

Timberlake are hilarious and so good. Justin Timberlake's face singing Lauren Hill's part in Killing Me Softly comes to mind. Their history of rap includes a good variety of songs from influential artists like Kurtis Blow, Salt n' Peppa, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J (YUM!) etc. I guarantee you will have to sing and dance with them, at least I did (to my hub's dismay). Make sure you watch the whole video to see parts 2 and 3 (it's worth it!). If you're interested in part one you can try here.

I LOVE snow! Unfortunately, it doesn't happen very often in SE VA so even a little bit is exciting. The only drawback to having it snow in the south is that no one knows how to drive. Being a damn Yankee, I'm overly critical of this fact, especially when it comes to those 4WD idiots that think they're invincible!
Anyway, I wrote a post about it a couple years ago and I thought you might enjoy it :)
The year went by so quick. December was hectic for us, as I'm sure it was for most of you too. After all the sewing and making, visiting, traveling (and we certainly did a lot of that), we needed to just veg out on the couch. If you're into video games, I highly recommend Borderlands 2...

Anyway, with all the craziness, I didn't take photos of any gifts. So stupid, I know. The only ones I have are from my Pollyanna swap with 3 of my favorite online friends (Christine, Selina and Amy). I made my hub pick the names and email everyone. He drew Selina for me which made it really easy since she is my Wonder Twin :)

We only listed our favorite color(s) and size and the rest would be up to Santa. Selina said she was into grey and yellow. I had this fabric in my stash for a long time and it seemed perfect for her present. I knew I wanted to make her something that she wouldn't normally buy or make for herself. I had been working on some patterns (change purses, clutches, eyeglass cases) for metal frames so I decided to make her a clutch.

I also wanted to add a little something extra. I wasn't sure what to do since I didn't have much time and my machine was acting up (that's a whole other story). In the end, I thought I'd make her something useful and opted for a needle book.

I made the outside using a charm pack and herringbone(?) pattern. It was actually an experiment that didn't work out for the intended project - too small. However, it was the perfect size for the needle book.

Because the book is tri-fold, it made creating the inside a bit trickier. Instead of using the felt pieces as pages, I cut 3 'flaps'.

Then I added some hemp twine (LOVE that stuff) to keep it tied together. There are also three pockets behind the mottled green fabric.

I really like the design but was very unhappy with the stitching. I think it is atrocious. You can't really tell in the photo. Honestly, I was lucky the stitching was secure with all the issues my machine was having. I also would have done the pockets differently. Initially, I wanted it to be one long pocket but the fabric wasn't taught enough. I had no choice but to make three instead. If there had been more time and my machine wasn't being a POS, I would have made a new one. I almost didn't send it. Then I thought about it some more and came to the conclusion that if I received it, I'd like it and use it. There was no point in keeping it because I just received one from a RATZ swap. So I sent it.

And I'm happy to report that Selina liked everything :) Seems like a good start to the new year :)

How about you guys- did you make any presents this year?
Today's musical muse comes from The Dead Weather. I love Jack White (The White Stripes / The Raconteurs) and I think he's quite brilliant. I also like Alison Mosshart (The Kills) and together... sooo good! I can't help but blast this song. Hope it wakes you up and gets you moving.

was attaching the hardware. I used an old piece of batting as
a barrier between the metal so that the fob wouldn't get scratched.
Unfortunately, it also made it difficult to see what I was doing and more than once my fobs came out crooked.

Then I had a brilliant idea. Yeah, I know that sounded conceited but I'm pretty excited about this!

I decided to glue a piece of felt to each side of the pliers. As you can see in the photo, I am able to see (and control) exactly how the hardware is being attached. No more crooked fobs! I used cheap felt from Michaels and E6000 glue.

This can work for a variety of projects, including gun construction (according to the Cop).
I also recommend stealing the pliers, attaching the felt, then asking for forgiveness - in that order ;)

EDIT: After about 10 fobs the felt started to wear through. I'm adding another layer but I think I'll look into a different material too. Make sure check the pliers frequently so that you don't scratch the hardware!

This time I'm going to share some of the issues I had while making the messenger bag.

First of all, I made this up as I went. I had a general idea as to what the finished bag should look like, but that was it. On one hand, it was a very liberating experience, on the other, it resulted in several mistakes that I couldn't fix.

<--- Like that one over there. I had the interior completely finished when I realized that it was way too big. So I had to take it apart. And because I was a bit frustrated, I may have taken it out on the lining... and ripped the fabric. But it wasn't until I put the bag together that I realized how bad it was.

My seam ripping fiasco also created an issue after putting the bag together. You can see that in the second photo. That too would have required taking apart the entire bag again. It also would have made the finished bag smaller. I chose to leave it and learn from it.

Take home message for this round: 'Patience, Young Padawan!'

There are a couple other photos on my Flickr page showing more issues and the process, in general.

Next Time: Finishing touches and the finished bag
Instead, I was battening down the hatches for Hurricane Sandy's arrival - can we even call that whore-monster a hurricane?! I'm sure I can come up with a few better words. But I digress...

So hurricanes - or as I prefer, MNIPs (Mother-Nature-Is-Pissed storms) - are an unfortunate reality when living on the East coast. We figured this out about 12 years ago when we moved to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia.

Storm Essentials or coping strategies...

I'd like to think we've come a long way and have become quite efficient when it comes to storm prep. But that first year? That first year we were clueless. And I mean CLUELESS! That hurricane season brought Floyd and Dennis back-to-back and, not only did we not listen to the warnings, but we didn't even have basic necessities like water (which the city shut off) or batteries (we lost power). No joke. I remember watching water pour into the first floor apartments and realizing, 'this $h1+ is for real'. Yes, we were very, very stupid.

Flash forward a few years to 2003 and Hurricane Isabel. Storm prep that year was packing up the car and getting the hell out of VA. That was not my initial plan but my husband (the cop) knew he'd be gone indefinitely and didn't want to worry about me so I packed up all the animals and headed to my mom's in Jersey.

When I finally came back a few days later, I was shocked - I don't know what other word to use. As soon as I hit Williamsburg, the reality of what Isabel did became obvious and only got worse the closer I got to home. The city where I taught was devastated. Three years after Isabel, I had students that were still living in FEMA trailers. Just awful...
See, the thing with bad weather and impending-doom warnings is that you really don't get it until you see it. Sure there's the news, Internet and every social media source available, but it doesn't really have the same meaning until you've seen or, gods forbid, physically experienced the destruction. I don't mean to say that we're not affected by tragedies or that we don't care, just that it's a whole lot different when it's 'home'.

And when I see photos of the Northeast, my stomach turns because that is home. And I suppose on a much deeper level, there's sorrow too because home is no longer that safe haven I turned to for Isabel.

But tragedy, no matter how it's witnessed, always puts things into perspective, (or at least it should!). And that's when humanity/community/compassion/etc. burns bright.

So often I am overly cynical and negative about our society, then something disastrous happens and I see people working together, giving selflessly, and I feel hope. I have read so many wonderful stories about people helping total strangers (like the photo on the right) and I can't help but feel affected by their generosity.

I believe we can all help in our own way. I may not be in a position to donate cash, but I have plenty of stuff I can donate (or make!). I've listed a few sites asking for donations that some of my friends back home posted and I will add more as I get them.
This is the first installment for the Amy Butler Cameo
Sew-A-Long. I first heard about it on Twitter (of course) and was already in
the middle of a project using Cameo so it was perfect timing.

I’ve had ideas for a messenger bag for quite some time but I
kept putting it off. I guess I knew it would take a bit more math than usual –
and you all know how I feel about that!

I typically buy small cuts of fabric because it’s much
easier to cut in a small space. However, my favorite things to make are bags –
any style – and yardage is the much better choice. I found a good deal on Cameo
at Fabricworm and bought a few ½ yards in various styles.

Besides creating a functional/practical and attractive messenger bag, my other goal was to use new techniques.

I added piping around the flap and to the sides of the outer fabric. It can be a bit tricky but I love it! Definitely going to add piping to the living room pillows I've been making for 2 years (shh!).

The other 'new' technique I attempted was elastic pockets. After using elastic for the pj shorts I made, I knew I wanted to try it on a bag pocket.

Here is a terrible photo of the outer pocket (under the flap). I had NO IDEA what I was doing so I improvised and ended up adding two triangular pieces, one to each side, because I didn't account for the extra inches needed due to the elastic bunching up the fabric (duh).

Oh well, live and learn - that's the point, right?

The hazards of seam ripping and getting it together...

So far, I've held back from using my top three bands. However, while I was driving home from work today, this band came up on my iPod and I thought, 'yeah, you really need to make Radiohead today's muse'. And 'hear' we are.

They've been around since the Early 90's when their first full-length album, Pablo Honey, was released. If you're even close to my age, you probably remember hearing Creep everywhere on the radio.

Although every album they release has some sort of brilliance to it, my personal favorite is In Rainbows. I truly believe that this needs to make it into one of those 'top 100 albums of all time' lists. It really is one of the best albums I've ever heard.

I had a really hard time deciding which video to include but I figured I'd go with a fun song. Whenever I hear Jigsaw Falling Into Place it makes me want to write. Maybe it's because the song paints such a vivid picture of... well, I'll just let you listen - hopefully, you'll be inspired too, or at least feel the need to dance!

I've finally finished a batch of Treat Sacks and they will be listed in the shops this weekend. You can see one of my favorites over there. I had a lot of fun making them and I'm happy with the 'improvements' from last year's bags. Each of the front panels is like a quilt block and took me a bit longer than I anticipated. However, I think it gives the effect of a boarded up window, which I think is cool. I also boxed them this time for a 2 inch depth to make it easier to get more candy - because that's what's most important!

Do you have a little ghoulie that would love one of these? If so, feel free to stop by the shop this weekend and check out the selection :D
However, the reality is that I know I will forget, especially this time of year when I'm sewing for the upcoming holidays (including Halloween!).

That's the thing about blogging - as much as I want to be consistent with posting, if I have to choose between sewing or writing a post, sewing will win every time. And I think that's the way it should be since that is where my creativity blooms.

Anyway, the Monday Musical Muse...

If you follow me on Twitter, then you've probably seen me Tweet about Amazon's music deals. They are, by far, the best when it comes to downloading music. They have an extensive selection that also includes a lot of FREE music - and it's good stuff! Then, every month, they offer '100 Albums for $5 Each'. Some of the ones that stand out (for my taste) are Muse, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Prince, A Perfect Circle and so many more. And don't worry, they have options from all genres!

Why did I just tell you that? Because each month, I look through the $5 selections and try to pick out something that I'm pretty sure I'd like but don't want to pay a lot for, 'just in case'. That's exactly what I did with this week's muse. I knew I liked The Black Keys but I only knew a few songs so when I saw Brothers was only 5 bucks, I grabbed it, and I'm glad I did!

They have a blues/garage/60's/hipster mod sound. Yeah, I'm not sure what that means either but that's what I hear when I'm listening (almost daily). For me, it's quickly becoming one of those cd's to play in the background while I focus on making and designing.

Here's a sample.

Enjoy!
